I decided it was time to go skiing at Grand Targhee Resort with my three and a half year old son, Axl, after spending most weekends at Jackson Hole and a few days and one evening at Snow King. I wanted to have a fun ski day with Axl on lower angled terrain. The plan was to meet and ski with Sam Southwick, pioneering ski film star, owner of Simpson House and one of the oldest ski bums around, and his girlfriend. They stay over at the Hotel at the base of the mountain and ski Targhee, preferring it over Jackson, despite Sam having a lifetime ski pass at Jackson Hole, for the lack of lift lines, easier terrain and more relaxed atmosphere.

Taking the bus from Jackson Hole to Grand Targhee Resort.

My wife dropped us off so we could take the Targhee Express ($88.00 for ride AND adult lift ticket…$44.00 for ride alone) shuttle from Snow King on a recent Saturday morning at 7:15 a.m. The ride through town, picking up passengers along the way, took 40 minutes before finally heading West on Highway 22 to Stiltson Ranch for the final stop before going over Teton Pass and eventually arriving at Targhee. If coming from town and you can get dropped off or have a car, I suggest parking on Scott Lane and getting on at The Lodge at Jackson Hole, 80 Scott Lane, at 7:40 a.m. to save yourself the time wandering through town.

Once we were on the road, so to speak, the ride was comfortable and mellow. I enjoyed hanging with Axl, reading the paper together and drinking my coffee (Axl happily popping the bubble that formed after each sip), all the while knowing that I was doing something beneficial for the environment by not driving and saving the pounding on my vehicle.

At Targhee we got our tickets, kids under 5 ski for free with the purchase of an adult ticket ($69.00…$44.00 when purchased with Targhee Shuttle…kids 5 and under ski for free).

I was unable to connect with Sam so Axl and i took the Dreamcatcher lift to the top of Fred’s Mountain, elevation 9,862 feet. Once on top we headed north on the Headwall Traverse to Chief Joseph Bowl. This was a bit steeper than Axl was enjoying, so I skied with him in between my legs and distracted him by doing “jumps” (lifting him high up into the air after hitting a small bump), after he asked to ski ”together.” (sure sign he is not comfortable with the steepness of the slope)

We hooked up with a couple fun guys from NYC who my wife and I met at Koshu, where we popped in for fantastic drinks made by Chris and food by Chef Josh Spisak, after checking out Kaidi Dunstan’s latest amazing show at the Taylo Piggot Gallery (formerly the Muse Gallery). It was a real treat to spend several days among Kaidi’s paintings while framing them with Rocky at Full Circle Frameworks.

We eventually made our way to the Beginner Area off of the Shoshone Lift. Let me tell you, this area is stellar for skiing with kids. There are eyeballs of different colors strapped to trees throughout the upper woods to start, which lead into the raven/bird trail and eventually worked our way back to the bottom of the lift, which felt like it was situated slightly uphill, which made it difficult for Axl to ski himself to the chair. I chose to push him to keep things moving along. The lift is a comfortable quad (four person) with a safety bar that I happily lowered over us on every run.

Alley Oop Alley had us giddy with the joy of moving swiftly over the smooth rollers. What a fantastic and fun run that it would be nice to have more of at other resorts. Kid friendly!

I had to be back in town earlier than the bus, which departs Targhee at 4:15 or so and arrives town around 5:30, would have arrived. So we got a ride from our new friends from NYC so I could make it to my presentation to a group from the World Presidents Organization at the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

It didn’t take more than a few minutes for Axl to fall asleep after a wonderful outing to Grand Targhee!

I climbed the Black Ice Couloir in Grand Teton National Park last week. I had a blast and it was the first moderately serious solo climb that I have done in several years. The climbing and conditions were favorable and felt moderate enough where I did not break out the rope, which I took as an added measure of safety. I could have belayed (protected myself in case of a fall…only falling 10 or 20 feet instead of 1,500…) myself with the rope or used the rope to rappel (slide down the rope off of anchors, some permanently in the rock (no bolts!) and other I could have left with the small selection of equipment I brought).

The Black Ice was gone (melted out due to lack of snow and warming of the earth) and now is back, possibly due to President Obama’s more progressive efforts to combat global warming?

The ice may hold out through the winter without sublimating out, but only time will tell. It was thin at the crux (most difficult section) but still climbable with ice axe picks in ice!

There might even be enough ice/snow next spring or summer for someone to make a snowboard or ski descent!

I shot several “Climbing Tips” videos that I will roll out over the coming days and weeks as we get fired up for ice climbing season!

Cheers,

Stephen

I took my son, Axl, camping for the first time over the weekend. After work Saturday I decided to pack up the car and head into the hills with my boy! Tent, sleeping bags and pads, food, pot, lighters, bug juice, diapers, wet wipes, warm cloths, water and away we went. The drive to Shadow Mountain from town is about 30 minutes. We came upon a great camping site that was unoccupied and drove in. I started setting up the tent and Axl discovered that fine dust is like “smoke” and he really liked “making smoke” by shuffling his feet. I was into it too!

In the first 5 minutes Axl was bitten by mosquitoes. Oops…dad forgot to put the bug juice on. Sprayed down and up and all around Axl was again content with making smoke and checking out our new environment as I set up the tent and got the fire going 30 minutes before sunset.

Shadow Mountain lies directly across the valley of Jackson Hole from the Tetons, in the Bridger Teton National Forrest. The views are spectacular. We soon had a deer walking through camp and heard coyotes howling and yipping not far off.

Once the tent was set up and our pads down and bags out of their stuff sacks, Axl did not want to leave the tent. I was a little apprehensive with having my three year old open and close the tent by himself because of the delicate nature of tent zippers, but after a quick lesson to follow the track with the zipper pull, “like a train on a track” he had it down!

Dinner was left over home made chili, grapes, crackers and string cheese. I heated up the chili in a pot right on the wood fire. I love cooking right on an open fire like that. It makes an incredible mess of the pot, but there is something so satisfying about it.

My initial attempt to get the fire going failed, which pissed me off because I had seen Bear Grillis do it so many times and it looked so easy. Tripling the amount of grass was the key to success!

Axl ran around and tried to control the smoke from being emitted from the fire. He is a strong willed boy who has a habit of telling people what to do. It didn’t work so well with the fire, but it was a good lesson none the less.

We ate our dinner and watched the sun set quietly behind the Tetons. After our meal Axl discovered that jumping over a log is great fun and did it several times as the light faded and day turned to night.

Axl enjoying the fire

Axl and the moon in firelight

We were treated to a 3/4 moon this night. A little before we were going to get ready for bed (change diaper, put jammies on, brush our teeth) Axl said he wanted to “go home.” I told him this was our home, for the night. He said he wanted to go to our “other” home, where Mommy was. I told him we would be there tomorrow and that we had already discussed this before leaving on our camping adventure…that we would not be coming back to sleep in our beds this night. He persisted for a few minutes and then I remembered what my wife is the master of, distraction. I said, “let’s brush our teeth and read a book.” It worked and we were in the tent ready to sleep before long.

Axl and the headlamp

Axl loves playing with his headlamp. What a great invention! Hands free light that won’t burn you, is easy to use, inexpensive and easy to carry. I have been using Petzl headlamps for years and highly recommend them.

In the morning I got the fire going again, heated up some water for coffee and oatmeal and we ate breakfast while being treated to a beautiful sunrise on the Tetons.

Sunries on the Tetons

After breakfast we went for a walk on game trails and saw many standing dead trees which had been burned in a fire. We also found some Bison poop and other, raising size, poop, of which its origin I am not certain. On the way back from the hike we found a dog leash which Axl held and called his new dog friend Mooxie.

After an unsuccessful attempt to poop in the woods I broke down camp. We planned on meeting Mom and my friend Peter France at Kelly Warm Springs at 10 a.m. The warm springs were a bit cool so we only spent a few minutes in the water. On the shore, basking in the sun, eating a banana and grapes we listened to a frog as we enjoyed the morning together.

Peter and Mom showed up and Axl was very happy to see his mommy! I handed him off to her and she immediately noticed the bug bites on his neck and gave me a scathing look. Later that day Mom and Axl would head to the Emergency Room for the bug bites which had swelled up Axl’s hand and arm to an alarming degree. A little Benedril and he was on his way.

Peter and I went for a beautiful mountain bike ride behind the Teton Science School.

I look forward to many more camping and other (climbing, hunting) adventures with Axl in and around this beautiful home of ours, Jackson Hole!
